Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries - and How Physiotherapy Can Help

What Is the Rotator Cuff?

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that surround the shoulder joint. Their main job is to keep your shoulder stable and help lift and rotate your arm.

When these muscles or tendons become irritated, strained, or torn, it can lead to pain, weakness, and limited movement.

Common Causes of Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator cuff injuries can develop suddenly (from a fall or heavy lift) or gradually over time due. Common causes include:

  • Age-related changes

  • Load related changes

  • Trauma – such as catching yourself during a fall or lifting something awkwardly

    Symptoms to Look Out For

You might have a rotator cuff injury if you experience:

    • Pain or stiffness in or around the shoulder

    • Weakness in the shoulder

    • Discomfort when lying on the affected side

    • Clicking, catching, or grinding sensations in the shoulder

How Physiotherapists Assess and Diagnose Rotator Cuff Injuries

A physiotherapist is often the first point of call for shoulder pain. At Shenton Quarter Physiotherapy we will:

  1. Take a detailed history - discussing your symptoms, and any activities that might contribute to your pain.

  2. Perform a physical examination - testing your shoulder strength, range of motion, and specific movements that reproduce symptoms.

  3. Use clinical tests - to help identify which rotator cuff tendon is involved and rule out other shoulder conditions.

  4. Refer for imaging (if needed)

Physiotherapy Treatment for Rotator Cuff Injuries

Treatment for rotator cuff injuries includes:

1. Pain Relief and Management

2. Restoring Range of motion

3. Strengthening and Rehabilitation Exercises

4. Return to Activity or Sport

When to See a Physiotherapist

If shoulder pain is affecting your sleep, work, or daily activities, or if it hasn’t improved after a few days of rest, it’s best to get it checked. Early assessment and treatment can make a huge difference to your recovery time and long-term shoulder health.

At Shenton Quarter Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists are experienced in assessing and treating shoulder injuries, including the rotator cuff. We’ll work with you to identify the cause, relieve your pain, and get you back to doing the things you love.
