Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a targeted treatment technique used to relieve muscle tightness, reduce pain and support tissue healing. Our Shenton Park physiotherapists are highly trained in dry needling and use it as part of a broader, individualised treatment plan.

How it works

A fine acupuncture needle is inserted into specific points in the soft tissue, often referred to as trigger points, to release muscular tension and stimulate the body's natural healing response. The technique is sometimes called clinical or western acupuncture, though it is distinct from traditional Chinese acupuncture in its application and evidence base.

What it is used for

Dry needling works well alongside physiotherapy for conditions including neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, hip and gluteal pain, headaches, and muscle tightness from overuse or injury. It is not a standalone treatment, it complements hands-on therapy and exercise rehabilitation to accelerate your recovery.

Is it right for me?

Your physiotherapist will assess whether dry needling is appropriate for your condition and explain what to expect before proceeding. Most patients notice a reduction in muscle tightness during or shortly after treatment.
